Health & Wellness and Exercise as Medicine

There are many people who are trying to stay healthy and fit. They don’t have any aspirations to become competitive athletes or even do a 10k event. They just want to stay fit and healthy and it is very well known that exercise is the most powerful way to prevent most major diseases in our society. However, many don’t know where to start or what is the best exercise program.

Other people have just been diagnosed with high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome or cancer. The scientific literature is piling up with research studies showing how exercise is not just the most effective therapy to prevent many diseases but it is also a great therapy to treat different diseases. No wonder why the American Medical Association and the American College of Sports Medicine decided to create the concept of “Exercise is Medicine” in order to prescribe exercise as medicine to many types of patients.

However, in order to elicit the right metabolic changes and create adherence to any exercise program, it is indispensable that exercise is prescribed individually according to each person’s needs. Further the precise dose of exercise needs to be adjusted to each individual’s unique physiological and metabolic condition. This is an area where we are experts. For over 20 years we have worked with some of the best athletes in the world where precision and individualization of training is key for their success. We have mastered the “art of training” and now we are deploying our expertise in exercise prescription to populations with chronic diseases.

Mitochondrial Function and Metabolic Efficiency.

Mitochondria are present in pretty much every cell of the body. They are the powerhouse of the cells and where we generate the energy necessary for life. Mitochondria are the place where we burn fats and carbohydrates for energy purposes. When mitochondria become dysfunctional we cannot properly burn fats and carbohydrates. Human metabolism becomes inefficient and dysregulated, which eventually may lead to a variety of diseases like type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease or obesity. These diseases are enclosed nowadays in the new term called **Cardio-metabolic disease** affecting millions. As an example, it is estimated that by year 2020 ~50% of adult population in the US will have either pre-diabetes or diabetes. The main cause of mitochondrial dysfunction is lack of physical activity. The only medication known to improve mitochondrial function is exercise. However, that exercise needs to be prescribed individually and by a professional.

Our approach to exercise prescription is unique due to our expertise from working with elite athletes as well as our innovative and pioneer methods. Through our Health & Performance Director, Dr. San Millan, we are the first ones to develop a methodology to evaluate mitochondrial function and metabolic efficiency. This method also allows us to precisely prescribe an individualized exercise program with the aim to improve mitochondrial function and metabolism.
