The Greatest Wealth Is Health

Health & Wellness

There are many people who are trying to stay healthy and fit. Many of them used to be fit when younger but now have lost all their fitness and gained weight. They don’t have any aspirations to become competitive athletes or even do a 10k event. They just want to stay fit and healthy but don’t know where to start.

Other people have just been diagnosed with high blood pressure, pre-type 2 diabetes or metabolic syndrome. They are trying to make a change through exercise and nutrition but don’t know where to start. It is very well known that exercise is the most powerful way to prevent most major diseases in our society. No wonder why the American Medical Association and the American College of Sports Medicine decided to create the concept of “Exercise is Medicine” in order to prescribe exercise as medicine to many patients. We strongly believe that exercise as medicine will change the medical field in years to come and we are pioneers in developing new methodologies to measure metabolic and cardiovascular function and experts in prescribing exercise and nutritional programs specifically tailor for each individual.

We are specialist in prescribing individualized exercise and fitness programs in order to re-gain Health & Wellness. These programs are based on each individual’s metabolism and overall fitness condition. Through state-of-the art equipment and science-based methodologies developed by us, we can study your metabolism as well as your strength and flexibility and tailor an individualized exercise program to regain health & wellness. Nutrition is a key component, which we also couple with exercise for maximal benefit.

The new Concepts in Health & Wellness.

Metabolic Flexibility is a growing term to describe the overall cardio-metabolic health of an individual. Metabolic flexibility is the ability that the body has to burn fats and carbohydrates for energy purposes. Individuals who are not “aerobically” fit have difficulties to burn fats and carbohydrates as well as difficulties to switch back and forth from one fuel to the other. The difficulty to burn fats eventually leads to store body fat and to gain weight which can lead to cardiovascular disease as well as metabolic syndrome. The difficulty to burn carbohydrates (glucose mainly) leads to increased blood glucose levels, which can eventually lead to insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes.

Individuals who are fit have a great capacity to burn both fats and carbohydrates as well as to switch back and forth between fuels for energy purposes. Therefore, these individuals tend to be lean as they don’t accumulate body fat. Moreover, except for rare genetic conditions, these individuals don’t develop type 2 diabetes and overall cardio-metabolic disease is rare among these individuals.

Mitochondrial Function. Mitochondria are present in pretty much every cell of the body. They are the powerhouse of the cells as in mitochondria we generate the energy necessary for life. Mitochondria are the place where we burn fats and carbohydrates for energy purposes. When mitochondria are dysfunctional we cannot properly burn fats and carbohydrates. Human metabolism becomes inflexible and dysregulated, which eventually may lead to a variety of diseases like type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease or obesity. These diseases are enclosed nowadays in the new term called Cardio-metabolic disease. It has been estimated that by year 2020 ~50% of adult population in the US will have either pre-diabetes or diabetes. Furthermore, mitochondrial dysfunction is another characteristic of other serious diseases like Alzheimer’s and many forms of cancers. The evidence portraying Alzheimer’s as the “Brain Diabetes” or “Type 3 diabetes” is piling up. Alzheimer’s patients show mitochondrial dysfunction, insulin resistance and difficulty to burn glucose. In fact patients with type 2 diabetes have a 65% higher probabilities to develop Alzheimer’s

In the last decade mitochondria are receiving an enormous amount of attention from the scientific community across the world as it is continuously being shown in multiple research studies that mitochondrial dysfunction is behind the pathogenesis of the aforementioned diseases. In a majority of cases, physical inactivity is behind this mitochondrial dysfunction as it causes overtime, an atrophy of mitochondria and eventually, mitochondrial dysfunction. Physical activity is the only known manner to maintain mitochondrial function in humans.

Elite endurance athletes possess the highest mitochondrial capacity of any humans and are the only population in the world that is free of acquired cardiometaboic disease. Specific and individualized training with specific training zones is key for elite athletes and endurance training is the base of any performance training program. Our methodology for exercise prescription for Health & Wellness purposes comes from the work done with world class and professional athletes around the world by Dr. San Millan for over 20 years. Training programs are individualized and tailored to each athlete according to their individual physiological and metabolic parameters and now exercise programs are also tailored for each person seeking an improvement in Health & Wellness.

Dr. San Millan developed a methodology to assess mitochondrial function and metabolic flexibility in vivo and a non-invasive way and he presented it at the World Mitochondria Society Conference in Berlin, Germany in 2015. We are proud to be the first ones to apply this method to assess mitochondrial function and individualize exercise prescription in order to re-activate mitochondrial function for Health & Wellness purposes.
